Bees gather a resin substance on the leaf buds of trees.  They then transform it into propolis which works to disinfect the beehive, seal cracks, build panels, and serves as a micro-biocidal agent.  It is also used to  embalm bigger intruders otherwise difficult to expel.  Propolis keeps the beehive pure even though it's warm temperature and high humidity make it a perfect environment for bacteria.  Propolis is in raw honey and when you consume it, you get all the benefits as it stimulates your own immune system.  Bee Propolis not only helps prevent the formation of plaque on your teeth (who'd have thought?!), but it is now being studied for its potential to control tumor growth.

Propolis in deposited in the honey, making honey an antioxidant, anti-microbial, anesthetic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory.  As far as I know, there is no antioxidant in a food greater than that in bee propolis.  No wonder honey has been used as a medicine for thousands of years. 

You can use raw honey to treat a sunburn, bite, herpes blister, or any small wound.  Just apply a dab of it our more more times a day.  Raw honey draws fluid away from the wound, suppressed microbial growth, and oxygenates the tissue.  This is because the bees secrete an enzyme (glucose oxidase) into the nectar, which then releases low levels of hydrogen peroxide when the honey makes contact with your wound.
 
Rather than risk a candida situation, many are opting for raw honey over antibiotics.  
 
Raw honey is not the same thing as processed honey.  You don't want to use processed or refined honey for your health as it contains none of the benefits and its chemistry has been significantly altered that it is now like any other processed sugar.
