Amethyst can form as stalactites from the ceilings of caves where iron, silica and calcium salts are present as the crystal forms. As water drips full of these minerals, forms amethyst "icicles" that hang from the ceiling. The tip of the stalactite or icicle has been sliced off and is called an amethyst rose cluster.
