What does gold-filled mean?
Gold-filled is a term used in the U.S., Europe and Asia that refers to two or three layers of gold alloy over a core metal of jeweler's brass. The gold alloy is bonded to the brass through a high-pressure heat technique. Gold filled chain is easy to care for and stays shiny for as long as you have it.
Unlike plated, electroplated or dipped metals, gold-filled is legally required to contain 5 percent or 1/20 gold by weight. The 5 percent is defined as the karat of the gold alloy. Our gold-filled chain is 14 karat gold-filled. 14k gold-filled jewelry is identified as 14/20 gold-filled or as 14 karat gold-filled.
Solid gold is pure gold is 24 karat. Pure gold is too soft to hold its shape. It has to be combined or alloyed with other metals to make it sturdier so it can hold a form. Karat refers to the alloy’s purity. For example, 8 karat gold is 8/24 pure gold or 33.3% pure. Gold-filled is not the same as solid gold. The gold-filled karat only refers to the gold layers that compose 5% of the product on the surface.
Care and Cleaning
Gold-filled does not de-laminate or peel like plated or dipped items. Nor does it tarnish as readily as silver. A lot of people do not like to clean their gold-filled chain. You can clean your gold-filled chain with mild soap and water. Hot water won't hurt it.
