Celadon color is the name for the shade of green glaze used on the porcelain. There are a few theories as to the origin of the term. 1) It is a French term from the 1600's given in favor of a shepherd of the same name who wore ribbons that were pale green in a book called L'Astrée (1627). 2) The term comes from a Ayyubid sultan who sent 40 pieces of pale green ceramic to another sultan in Syria in 1171. 3) There is a Sanskrit term, sila-dhara, which means green stone.
