Two Raku Ceramic Skull Beads

1 inch deep by .66 high Raku glazed ceramic skull beads.  Skull beads are drilled horizontally with a 2.5mm hole from side-to-side at skull's eye level.

Raku dates back to 1500's Japan.  Raku is different from other kinds of glazed ceramics in how it is fired.

Usually, ceramics are put into an unheated kiln and then the temperature is brought up slowly.  This can be as short as eight hours or as long as two days or more plus 12 to 24 hours for cooling.  When the kiln is sufficiently hot, it is turned off and the ceramicist waits until everything inside is cool enough to remove by hand.

Ceramics, such as these ceramic beads, were loaded into a preheated kiln.  The temperature must be hot enough to melt the glaze.  The ceramic beads are then quickly fired, as in 15 to 30 minutes and the ceramic beads are removed with tongs while blazing hot.
